&lt;p&gt;This week the User Engagement and User Volunteer Community teams reached a significant milestone &amp;#8212; we passed &lt;b&gt;15 million direct relationships for Mozilla Firefox&lt;/b&gt;. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It&amp;#8217;s hard to believe that only a year ago, across all our user communication channels - we were talking in English only to around 4 million people. Today, more than five and half million people receive our monthly email newsletter in five languages; localized by our volunteer community team (with more on the way). And ten million other fans/followers are actively engaged in social (Facebook and Twitter) on a daily/weekly basis; sharing and liking our content throughout the world. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The trajectory has been amazing. Our average sign up rate for email last week was around 185,000&amp;#160;&lt;a href="https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/newsletter/"&gt;newsletter&lt;/a&gt; new subscribers, and around 95,000 new weekly fans for &lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/Firefox?ref=ts"&gt;Facebook&lt;/a&gt;. That&amp;#8217;s incredible growth!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We continue to drive these large growth numbers, however, engaging with our users in channel is the most important role of our team, and whereby we create force multipliers for &lt;i&gt;reach&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;amplification&lt;/i&gt; of our brand. &lt;p&gt;TODAY = the Facebook generation, consuming, wasting time, trying to be something. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;TOMORROW = a generation of makers, tinkerers, creating value, building tomorrow. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In the next five years more people will code, more kids will remix, more people will expect to participate. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Open source at its very core has thrived and grown by allowing anyone to get involved, fostering collaboration, and striving for openness. As a company out there, chances are you have a social media presence and have therefore, already begun experimenting with community involvement with your brand. However, it is only skimming the surface of what is to come. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Here are 5 considerations that will help you prepare for the next generation of Web makers ready to be put to work. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;#1 Reduce the barrier to participation.&lt;/b&gt; If you have a strong social media presence on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest, identify your biggest fans, encourage them to become brand advocates and help other users with support issues. Reward them, get to know who are the most loyal and active fans. Maybe at some point in the future you&amp;#8217;d give them access to your accounts to post on your behalf? Takes a lot of trust, but it is not impossible. When you allow your trusted fans inside your house; they are overwhelmingly your loyal devotees.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;#2 Let customers build your product. &lt;/b&gt;The Web makes testing and garnering feedback easier than ever. Give your users an easy way to provide their thoughts on product experience or ideas for future needs. Those who reply often, invite them to join a special task force who will test and build the next generation product. Invite them to your office, or a weekend event. Treat them as equals and listen to the great advice they will give. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;#3 Find solutions outside of your walls. &lt;/b&gt;Open innovation is gaining momentum. If there are problems you can&amp;#8217;t solve inside your org, look beyond your R&amp;amp;D team. Online communities such as &lt;a href="http://www.innocentive.com/"&gt;Innocentive&lt;/a&gt; are finding solutions for companies, governments and non-profits in the open from all over the world. It helps to look outside of your industry and geography for answers. We often think too narrowly and do not open our world to other impressions. Beyond open innovation, talk to a wide range of people often from all walks of life. It will change your perspective and may even create your next success. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;#4 Strive for transparency.&lt;/b&gt; Even if you are a Fortune 500 company, there are still numerous ways you can be more transparent. Do your customers know what happens to their data, do you have a privacy policy longer than 5 pages? If so, you are not being transparent. Strive to inform your customers about how your business is run, they will thank you in the long term. Then allow your customers to control their web experience - many companies (e.g. &lt;a href="http://info.yahoo.com/privacy/uk/yahoo/preferences/"&gt;Yahoo&lt;/a&gt; ) are building privacy control centers. Take in a primary principle of open source, and put the user front and center. Kick start educating your customers, inform them early and start building user control functions. Trust me, it will soon be a business table stake that all users will demand. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;#5 Give back.&lt;/b&gt; Not everyone can completely open source their code, not even a little, and some have no code to share at all. That said, we all have something we can give back in terms of knowledge sharing, expertise or perhaps even code. Companies are stronger the more they can create and / or be part of an eco-system. It will create new ideas, foster innovation in new ways and bring forward potential new hires. Can you help a local school or community center? Can you check a piece of code into &lt;a href="https://github.com/"&gt;GitHub&lt;/a&gt;? The more you give, the more you&amp;#8217;ll get back.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;br/&gt;
Things to remember on this journey: people are basically good, put the customer at the center and think non-linear.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Many people commented on my last post about &lt;a href="http://janefinette.com/post/20552252223/want-to-win-brand-advocacy-on-facebook"&gt;growing and nurturing brand advocates on Facebook&lt;/a&gt;. You asked, so how are you really doing that? Here are a few simple ways based on how we engage fans every day at Mozilla:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;# 1. Vary your Facebook content. Think carefully about your content strategy and how posts effective each other. At Mozilla we try to plan 7-14 days out (and many months longer for big campaigns / announcements). We keep a balance of &lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151426979005022&amp;amp;set=a.145889545021.235126.14696440021&amp;amp;type=1"&gt;1/3 product news&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/Firefox/posts/338178256227796"&gt;1/3 tips and tricks&lt;/a&gt;, and 1/3 just &lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151412868015022&amp;amp;set=a.145889545021.235126.14696440021&amp;amp;type=1"&gt;plain-old-engaging-fun&lt;/a&gt;. This variety allows us to communicate broadly. We&amp;#8217;re conscious not to be narcissistic only giving our own news when necessary, and focusing on what will be of value to the reader. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;# 2. Allow users to create content. We very often ask the opinion of our fans, and then &lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/Firefox/posts/323463051040271"&gt;post those comments&lt;/a&gt;, questions, photos. We have a &amp;#8216;&lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150945968250022&amp;amp;set=a.10150249717520022.532298.14696440021&amp;amp;type=1"&gt;fan of the week&lt;/a&gt;&amp;#8217;. It&amp;#8217;s a demonstration of who we are, and how we authentically communicate. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;# 3. Think Share. Back to content strategy. You may well be creating interesting content. But ask yourself, will someone want to share it, like it, comment upon it? Alter your content strategy, write a post in a way that will generate engagement. Ask more questions, &lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151364656505022&amp;amp;set=a.145889545021.235126.14696440021&amp;amp;type=1"&gt;ask your fans to &amp;#8216;like&amp;#8217; and &amp;#8216;share&amp;#8217;&lt;/a&gt;. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;# 4. Give back. You cant always take (see #1). Content should be a balance. Sharing should feel fun and engaging to the user - it shouldn&amp;#8217;t feel forced. Don&amp;#8217;t &amp;#8216;market&amp;#8217; to your fans - talk to them. Treat them as friends (remember that&amp;#8217;s what you do on Facebook!). &lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt; The value of Facebook is huge, the potential to amplify ones message is massive, and yet every day brands are failing to treat their fans as citizens and only wanting to push their products. &lt;p&gt;Read this super post today on Marketing Prof entitled &amp;#8220;&lt;a href="http://www.mpdailyfix.com/huzzah-four-ideas-for-activating-your-brand-advocates/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MarketingProfsDailyFix+%28Marketing+Profs+Daily+Fix%29&amp;amp;utm_content=Google+Reader"&gt;Four Ideas for Activating Your Brand Advocates&lt;/a&gt;&amp;#8221;. &lt;a href="http://www.amplifinity.com/"&gt;Theresa Trevor&lt;/a&gt; of Amplifinity describes ways to convert Facebook fans who &amp;#8216;like&amp;#8217; a page (and who probably don&amp;#8217;t &amp;#8220;&amp;#8230;promote your brand in any measurable way&amp;#8221;) to become brand advocates who are actively engaged in promoting your brand, bringing in new business, writing reviews etc.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;At Mozilla where word of mouth marketing and brand advocacy are key to both our engagement and acquisition strategy, we already actively employ these types of brand advocacy programs and have done so successfully for many years (its partly how as a non-profit, we&amp;#8217;re able to compete alongside those tech behemoths).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Particularly with regard to growing a larger Facebook audience (&lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/Firefox"&gt;currently 8.5 million fans&lt;/a&gt;) and the debate of quality over quantity, I believe audience size is actually incredibly valuable, but much like Trevor asserts, only if you continue to effectively encourage group participation and action. Said another way, you can&amp;#8217;t invite someone to dinner and not serve any food &amp;#8212; nor would you want to cook a 5 course meal, only to then have no-one eat? We engage with our Facebook fans every day and over the last six months have gone a level deeper. We&amp;#8217;ve begun to focus beyond our monthly Facebook activity rate as a core metric (averaging 45-50% of our fans liking / commenting/ sharing p/m), to doing that plus specifically focusing on increasing the number of Facebook shares (# of people talking about this).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We are able to calculate the number of friends our Facebook fans have, and therefore understand (i) what is effectively our entire &amp;#8216;potential Facebook audience&amp;#8217; and (ii) the audience reach for a post that was talked about by our Facebook fans. That multiplication number for Firefox on Facebook is 81. Over the past six months we&amp;#8217;ve been able to successfully increase the number of shares on Facebook by 20% each quarter respectively. Think about that with a Facebook audience of our size, and think about how much amplification that translates into? (&lt;i&gt;In the first quarter generating more than 2 million people talking about Firefox on Facebook&lt;/i&gt;).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Most companies these days have a serious Facebook strategy, some with big and expensive campaigns,  &amp;#8212; for me, that&amp;#8217;s not always necessary. Rather nurturing daily interaction with thoughtful content and building social gravity is what will create loyal users, who will ultimately want to talk about you with their friends. And just about anyone can do that! &lt;/p&gt;

Yesterday I had a great conversation with someone who is looking to move into social engagement; marketing that makes a difference with more human interaction. We talked about building a strong loyal user base via social, and how passionate users can encourage others. Participation, Engagement, Human were the words that kept coming up time and time again by both sides throughout the meeting. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Mozilla has been doing this since it began &amp;#8212; and whilst we have implemented clear strategies around the Mozilla mission, IMHO it struck me that our mission, and non-profit nature drew us naturally into the social sphere with good honest interaction and communication. With no motivation other than to make the web better, we embodied and embraced the evolution of the web as &lt;i&gt;the&lt;/i&gt; place to create, to participate and to connect (and heck &amp;#8212; we&amp;#8217;ve done an awful lot to create that space too!). &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Social is now a massive part of our communication strategy, it still permeates through all areas of our organization &amp;#8212; and we&amp;#8217;re still having those honest and authentic conversations. Suddenly it seems that to &amp;#8216;pin&amp;#8217; is everywhere. &amp;#8216;Pin&amp;#8217; was mentioned in three separate meetings I had last week in varying forms. We&amp;#8217;re not just talking &amp;#8216;Pinterest&amp;#8217; here, but pinning: websites, apps, new stories and even restaurants. I even caught myself saying it in conversation today on a completely unrelated topic!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;And on that note, I&amp;#8217;m somewhat afraid that we&amp;#8217;re about to see a slew of niche Pinterest style sites that will truly only exist to be (i) an immense distraction of time for their fans, and (ii) yet another burden on marketeers constantly battling to keep up with the latest vogue of social expression.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The bigger interesting trend I see though with this type of engagement, is yet another step toward images taking center stage with minimal amounts of text waiting in the wings. Be it Facebook&amp;#8217;s new timeline view, &lt;a href="http://now.msn.com/"&gt;MSN Now&lt;/a&gt;, or &lt;a href="http://pinterest.com/"&gt;Pinterest&lt;/a&gt; itself - the direction is (what I am calling&amp;#8230;) &amp;#8216;image first&amp;#8217; followed by the slightest amount of written word - usually headline grabbing and that&amp;#8217;s enough.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It&amp;#8217;s a demand of our busy social generation who only create/consume/interact with information in smaller and smaller bite size pieces. The old adage a &amp;#8216;picture speaks a thousand words&amp;#8217; is so true, and our hunger for images has never been stronger. Thanks to the likes of Instagram (with its $500 million valuation) everyone can take and post an artful picture within a few moments. I do it myself, and love it.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;As a creative and visually driven person, I guess I should be happy that the Web is becoming more colorful. And in a way I am. I&amp;#8217;m also concerned (warning old person thinking here) for the future of long form expression. And how images without context can alarm, manipulate, confuse and much more. &lt;/p&gt;

We all had to come to work on the balls of our feet and go up the stairs two steps at a time. &amp;#8221; &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://null"&gt;I recently read Y&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.amazon.com/Let-People-Surfing-Education-Businessman/dp/0143037838/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1331159866&amp;amp;sr=8-1"&gt;von Chouinard - &amp;#8216;Let my people go surfing&amp;#8217; &lt;/a&gt;of which this quote above was taken. It&amp;#8217;s the story of the outdoor company Patagonia with its unorthodox beginning, business practices and unique team spirit &amp;#8212; which live on throughout the company today. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I had no idea that beyond creating amazing tech-s&lt;a href="http://null"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;mart clothing and equipment they were mission led as an organization from the beginning. Today, the environmental cause is well understood, but  back in the 1980s and before the &amp;#8216;green revolution&amp;#8217; Patagonia were (and still are) pioneers in supporting environmental activism. They were some of the first businesses to think about organic materials and sustainability. Internally, their work place and ethics inspired the open plan office we think is normal today in Silicon Valley and much more. They even helped change Federal workplace laws which allowed childcare on site and gave women and men maternity leave in America. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I truly believe that we all have something to contribute and do something that speaks to us, that we believe in. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We wont always be able to run up the stairs two steps at a time every single day &amp;#8212; but wouldn&amp;#8217;t that be nice? &lt;/p&gt;

2011 ended well, very well, I am delighted to say. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Socially speaking&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br/&gt;
With the help of &lt;a href="http://dailycavalier.com/"&gt;William Reynolds&lt;/a&gt;, the first person to join the user engagement team in Nov 2010 we more than doubled the number of social connections on &lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/Firefox?ref=ts"&gt;Facebook&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="https://twitter.com/#!/firefox"&gt;Twitter&lt;/a&gt; last year. Today, over 7 million people are interacting with Firefox via their preferred social channel. William, our social expert led our sharing campaigns for the Firefox 4 launch with the &lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/50974870@N00/6056669007/in/set-72157627340492918"&gt;Twitter Party&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/50974870@N00/6514395165/in/set-72157627340492918"&gt;Facebook badges&lt;/a&gt; program. He also stood up our &lt;a href="http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/army-of-awesome"&gt;Army of Awesome&lt;/a&gt; Twitter support channel, relaunched the &lt;a href="http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefoxlive/"&gt;Firefox Live campaign&lt;/a&gt;, and too many other social engagement campaigns to mention here. William was a super intern at Mozilla in 2009, he&amp;#8217;s now our super social man, who lends a hand to all folks on the team.  You could say he has a lot more friends than any of us put together.&lt;/p&gt;

In mid January 2011&amp;#160;&lt;a href="http://winstonbowden.com/"&gt;Winston Bowden&lt;/a&gt; changed his world and came West from North Carolina to head up and drive our email engagement program. Starting from virtually nothing Winston strategically grew our program whilst rolling up his sleeves every single day to grow the number of &lt;a href="https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/newsletter/"&gt;Firefox and You monthly newsletter&lt;/a&gt; subscribers to almost 3 million by end of 2011. Winston also spent much time helping nurture and grow other teams who communicate directly with their users, fans and developers via email. We&amp;#8217;ve come a very long way under Winston&amp;#8217;s tutelage. He has built a steadfast email program, that like our products, answers to no-one but you. We take engagement, privacy and the latest email best practices with regard to data incredibly seriously. And to all those marketeers out there &amp;#8212; believe us when we say; not spamming, not heavy-handed targeting, not selling your customers data pays dividends. We respect our email subscriber like a family member or friend &amp;#8212; and with often 20+% open rates and 8-10% click through rates, we have email numbers that are way, way above average. We&amp;#8217;re terrifically proud of our program. &lt;/p&gt;

In early Summer, we had the great fortune to hire &lt;a href="http://chelseanovak.wordpress.com/"&gt;Chelsea Novak&lt;/a&gt;. Chelsea based in the Mozilla Toronto office had been working for the &lt;a href="https://www.mozilla.org/about/"&gt;Mozilla Foundation&lt;/a&gt; in a fundraising and engagement role for 2 years when we had the great opportunity to have her join our throng. Chelsea was and is different. She understands both how to win and how to keep Firefox users. She embraces scale and leverage, and has been able to apply this to everything she touches. One of the biggest projects Chelsea lead and launched was the &lt;a href="https://affiliates.mozilla.org/en-US/"&gt;Mozilla Affiliates program&lt;/a&gt;, finishing the year with a program live in more than 10 languages, and with 10,000+ affiliates around the world. She also managed several partner campaigns with &lt;a href="http://www.ripcurl.com/?firefoxbrowser"&gt;Ripcurl&lt;/a&gt; and the Ripcurl Pro event in San Francisco, and currently with the &lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/50974870@N00/6511293555/in/set-72157627340492918"&gt;Firefox Challenge&lt;/a&gt; challenge on Crowdrise (celebrities are still duking it out for their charities to win). We&amp;#8217;ve ended the year with even stronger word of mouth marketing programs and new ways for our Firefox users to engage and become advocates. &lt;/p&gt;

In the late Summer &lt;a href="http://carmencollins.wordpress.com/"&gt;Carmen Collins&lt;/a&gt; based in Florida became our content editor. As our direct channels grew and the number of people wanting to interact with us grew, it was clear we needed to put even more thought and rigor around a communication strategy and also calendaring of content. Carmen brought her skills as a writer, and process advocate - and set about constructing and implementing a content strategy. After several iterations we sit in a place where scores of stake-holders communicate and plan content together every week, and every month. Carmen also birthed our user engagement blog &lt;a href="http://blog.mozilla.com/theden/"&gt;The Den&lt;/a&gt; which currently acts as a destination for articles often posted in social or helping give more context to email articles &amp;#8212; there is much more to come. Lastly, Carmen is also a social media maven, and has been instrumental in assisting William work on increasing engagement in those channels; particularly working together with William to increase social sharing on Facebook in the last 3 months of the year by 20% to 300,000 shares.&lt;/p&gt;

Lastly, &lt;a href="http://jessilyndavis.wordpress.com/"&gt;Jess Davis&lt;/a&gt; also relocated from North Carolina to expand our email program throughout the world. Jess works very closely with Winston and apart from being a coding whizz, process junkie and sheer bundle of energy and delight - she has very quickly grown our email program to include truly localized versions of the Firefox and You newsletter in French, German, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish. Jess recruited and works directly with our extended team of volunteer email content leads each month to produce and localize for their specific locales. Jess, has only been on board just over 3 months but already grew our volunteer efforts from 0 to 12. It was a great way to end the year. &lt;/p&gt;

And so, as you&amp;#8217;ve read 2011 was an incredibly busy and successful year for the user engagement team. We smashed throughout our main target of building direct relationships with more than 10 million Firefox users. We nurtured and created loyalty. We built advocacy programs and allowed others to help. We extended beyond the English speaking world. We grew our team to include some amazing volunteers and paid staff from around the world.*  &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We&amp;#8217;re putting the finishing touches to our 2012 plans. If this year is anything like last, its going to be a superb year! &lt;/p&gt;

So how do you compete and win? Its always been this way at Mozilla &amp;#8212; but despite the odds in the very beginning and continuing today (with even more competition I might add) we continue to defy belief in terms of market-share and impact. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;How is this possible? &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;We&amp;#8217;ve built an incredibly  strong product, community and brand foundation, and on top of that there are 3 areas in User Engagement which allow us to significantly have impact:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;1. &lt;b&gt;Direct relationships&lt;/b&gt; with our users&lt;br/&gt;2. A loyal and passionate &lt;b&gt;community of advocates&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br/&gt;3. &lt;b&gt;Partners&lt;/b&gt; who want to delight and tell our story&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I recently gave a first talk about how Mozilla is able to compete using these&lt;i&gt; &lt;b&gt;force multipliers&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt; to the &lt;a href="https://webfwd.org/portfolio/index.html"&gt;WebFWD teams&lt;/a&gt;, describing no matter what size or scale of operation you have; you can attempt to do the impossible by focusing on: Engagement, Participation and Partnering. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Here&amp;#8217;s the deck (note: there are a lot of visuals, and not much context - I&amp;#8217;ll be writing more detail about these force multiplying factors in future posts).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So by now you&amp;#8217;ve probably heard about the &lt;a href="https://buy.louisck.net/news"&gt;Louis CK experiment&lt;/a&gt;. You know, the one about the comedian who blows off the distributors and makes a cool million bucks in revenue in just 12 days &amp;#8212; on his own!  And nope, that&amp;#8217;s no joke!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_C.K."&gt;American comedy writer/performer&lt;/a&gt; made more than 1 million dollars with $500,000 in profit by releasing and distributing his latest performance &lt;i&gt;Live at the Beacon Theater&lt;/i&gt; as a non-copy-protected download for purchase on his own website for a tiny amount of $5.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Its a beautiful thing watching those few brave folks in the entertainment world break out alone into the digital realm. Technology resources, payment processing and the ability to socially building your own brand - are all out there on the Web and waiting to be used. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;All the best to Louis CK (and the charities he&amp;#8217;s supporting with $280,000 of the proceeds), he understands and embraces his own force multipliers &amp;#8212; the value of his work, and that of the new direct relationships he just made with his fans. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The world needs more of these digital experiments, and more artists who want to connect directly with their audiences and fans. &lt;p&gt;In the realm of social media as king, having friends is easy, but keeping all those new friends engaged and nurturing that friendship isn&amp;#8217;t as simple as it sounds. At Mozilla we have nearly &lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/Firefox?ref=ts"&gt;6.5M friends on Facebook&lt;/a&gt;, and we work hard to engage with our fans on multiple levels. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Our content is split pretty evenly between being (i) informative about Firefox as a product and sharing the latest news, (ii) offering helpful advice and tips on how to make the most of Firefox, and (iii) most importantly balanced with fun, engaging and inspiring engagement activities. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Throughout 2011 we&amp;#8217;ve been able to significantly grow Firefox engagement activity on Facebook, with between 45-50% of our fans interacting with the brand on a monthly basis. We&amp;#8217;ve also doubled the number of fans who &amp;#8216;like&amp;#8217; Firefox.  That&amp;#8217;s pretty impressive given our size and compared to other high-profile brands. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The basis for all this? A hug, a handshake, a high-five. Every time we post and consider content in our direct communication channels we do that remembering our followers are our &amp;#8216;friends&amp;#8217;. We tell news, share tips, give virtual hugs, smiles and pointers to fans we care deeply about.  &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There are many more ways we can improve our interactions with fans and increase our direct engagement further - we&amp;#8217;d love to hear your thoughts on how we can continue to make our social media channels engaging.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We&amp;#8217;re in the business of building friendships at Mozilla. &lt;p&gt;Two weeks ago &lt;a target="_blank" href="http://janefinette.com/post/4814581757/firefox-4-upgrade-campaigns-getting-under-way"&gt;I wrote about one of our campaigns encouraging existing users of Firefox to upgrade&lt;/a&gt; to the latest and best version so far of Firefox &amp;#8212; Firefox 4. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The first approach we took was aimed directly at Firefox 3.6 users, and asking them to upgrade based on certain web interests they may have (social networking, gaming, content streaming and more), and matching the benefits of using Firefox 4. The second approach we&amp;#8217;re taking is motivating satisfied users of Firefox 4 to help someone in their network make that upgrade.
